Detail

Tensions between the police and the people in Hong Kong continue to escalate. On the evening of Friday (August 2) local time, hundreds of demonstrators surrounded the Ma'anshan Police Station in Shatin District for the second day in a row and asked the police to release eight people arrested one day ago for "possession of weapons" and other charges, including Chen Haotian, founder of the Hong Kong National Party.

A small group of demonstrators slapped the closed door of the police station and sprayed "Restore Hong Kong, Time Revolution" and graffiti insulting the police. Four protesters threw coins at the gate of the police station to vent their dissatisfaction with the police with alternative performance art.

"Release the arrested hostages!" hundreds of demonstrators shouted slogans across from the police station. The demonstrators did not wear uniform, and many people seemed to be local residents.

At about 10 pm, riot police and police cars arrived at the scene. Witnesses said that Rupert Dover, the chief superintendent of the Hong Kong Police Force and David Jordan, the commander of the police mobile force, who were called "black police" by the public, were also among them. The two British police officers were suspected of ordering shooting and using violence during the crackdown on the "anti delivery" march on June 12. They also participated in the clearing of the 2014 Zhanzhong Movement.

Video broadcast on the Internet showed that the police wearing helmets and holding batons and shields confronted the public. A young man who tried to negotiate with the riot police was pulled away by several elderly people.

"Don't reason with them, they are animals, not people," said a white-haired man angrily.

The police also rushed into a high-rise building near the police station and clashed with the citizens.

When the police threatened to use force against the demonstrators, many journalists on the scene blocked the demonstrators with their bodies.

At about 11:00 that night, witnesses said that the police fired at least five pepper balls on the overpass without warning. At that time, there were many pedestrians on the overpass. This picture was recorded live on RTHK's network video.

Galileo Cheng, Social Affairs Officer of the Hong Kong Catholic Institution Staff Association, posted a photo on Twitter that showed that the glass of the overpass was punctured by a pepper ball.

"This once again shows that 'non lethal' weapons can still be lethal," he wrote.

The demonstration lasted until about 3 a.m. on Saturday. The demonstrators agreed to "see you tomorrow in Mongkok".

Hong Kong citizens plan to continue their rally in Mongkok on Saturday and call for a general strike in Hong Kong next Monday (August 5).

On Friday, two mass rallies broke out in Hong Kong. Hong Kong civil servants took to the streets for an unprecedented time and held anti-government rallies in Chater Park and nearby streets in Central. The demonstrators held up slogans such as "guarding the future" and "political neutrality is not equal to the numbness of conscience", and lit up the night sky with mobile phone lights.
